Sweater Weather Meets Spooky Season: DIY Halloween Vase

In this post – how to make a beautifully spooky Halloween decoration using a thrifted sweater and flower vase.

A Creepy Twist on a Cozy Sweater Vase

You may have seen cozy sweater vases all over Pinterest. How about an equally fun but darker version? With a thrifted sweater and vase, you can easily create a uniquely creepy Halloween decoration. And – since a sweater has two sleeves, why not make two?

Supplies Needed

Glass flower vase shaped like a cylinder

Old sweater (or an inexpensive one)

Halloween ribbon

Small clip-on bats

Halloween florals

Glue gun

Scissors

Foam floral block

Step 1: Measure and Cut Sleeve

To start, cut the sleeve off of the sweater, using the vase as a guide to determine length needed. Allow an extra 1” length of sleeve for wrapping into the top of the vase.

Step 2: Slide Vase Into Sleeve

Slide the vase into the sleeve so that the bottom of the vase is even with the cuff of the sleeve. Add hot glue to the inside rim of the vase and fold the cut edge of the sleeve into the vase. Carefully hold until glue cools. Tip: You can use the remaining body of the sweater to make a Halloween pillow! All you need are some basic sewing skills.

Step 3: Add Ribbon and Bat

I have a great tutorial on bow making on this post:

Once the bow is complete, tie it to the vase. I chose to attach it where the two colors of the sweater sleeve meet. How high or low you place the bow is up to you. Clip or glue the bat decoration on to the center of the bow.

Step 4: Arrange Florals

Trim a floral block to fit inside the vase. (I cut this one in half lengthwise.) Arrange the florals in the block. I used three: tall black sparkling twigs, dark roses, and a ghost and bat pick. They form a pleasing arrangement because they vary in height.
